October 26, 2020 (PORTLAND, ORE.) – Tonight, just 38 days after the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Mitch McConnell was successful in moving forward the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett. All Senate Democrats voted to oppose the confirmation and were joined by one sole Republican, Senator Collins from Maine.
Bader Ginsburg, a pioneer for gender equality and former civil rights lawyer, left an indelible mark on the Supreme Court. She will now be replaced by Seventh Circuit Judge Coney Barrett. Coney Barrett has an extremist record, with documented hostility to Roe v. Wade and pending Supreme Court cases including those that would uphold the Affordable Care Act. With the addition of Coney Barrett, the conservative majority on the Supreme Court now has the votes to reverse these landmark rulings, which would deprive millions of people access to essential health care services, including abortion care.
On behalf of NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon’s board of directors, staff, and thousands of active members across the state, Executive Director Christel Allen released the following statement:
“Tonight was a power grab by the GOP, a party who knows they will likely be in the minority after this November’s election. By calling this confirmation for a vote, Mitch McConnell has shown a complete lack of respect for the 61 million Americans who have already voted in this year’s election.
Instead of respecting the wishes of those voting in 2020, McConnell and the GOP Senators have rammed through the confirmation of extremist Amy Coney Barrett, giving anti-choice conservatives the votes to overturn or gut Roe vs. Wade, the ACA, and weaken protections for voting rights, LGBTQ+ protections and environmental regulations.
We cannot allow the six-member conservative majority on the Supreme Court to govern our courts and bodies. It is imperative that the seven in 10 Americans who support Roe v. Wade show up to vote like our rights are on the line—because they are. At NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon we are doing everything we can to elect state and local leaders who are ready to step up to advance reproductive freedom, gender equality, and social justice at the state and regional level.”
