PORTLAND, OR – Today, NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon‘s Political Action Committee (PAC) announced a slate of slate of endorsements for municipal candidates, including Multnomah County Commissioners Sharon Meieran (District 1), Jessica Vega Pederson (District 3) and Lori Stegmann’s (District 4) reelection campaigns, as well as support for Tera Hurst, NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon Board Member and first-time candidate for Portland City Commissioner (Position 2).

The PAC’s decision to focus on local elections in 2020 was inspired by city and county officials stepping up to affirm and expand access to reproductive care. In July, Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty led Portland City Council in passing a resolution directing city attorneys to file amicus briefs in opposition to abortion bans passed in 2019. A similar resolution passed in Eugene this past September, led by Mayor Lucy Vinis.

Andra Stoll Carrick, Interim Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon PAC, shared why these local leaders hold a special place as reproductive health equity champions:

Tera Hurst will be an incredible addition to City Hall. [At Renew] she has redefined what an environmental leader looks like, and inspired NARAL to support Clean Energy Jobs, with the understanding that reproductive justice includes environmental justice. Commissioner Stegmann continues to center investment in East County and celebrate its diversity as its greatest strength. As a family physician, Commissioner Meieran is the ideal champion for expanding health care access. And Commissioner Vega Pederson — Vice President of the NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon Board of Directors — is leading the effort to expand preschool for all, recognizing that reproductive freedom must also include the resources needed to raise a family.”

Commissioner Vega Pederson responded to the news and took the opportunity to share her support for Tera Hurst: “NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon has been the state’s pro-choice political leader for 43 years, and their 13,000 supporters statewide are ready to show up in 2020. I’m honored to be part of NARAL’s legacy and to support Tera Hurst, who will bring her leadership and activism in the fight for reproductive freedom to Portland City Council. Tera’s perspective and life experience as a single mom in long-term recovery will give a new voice to thousands of Portlanders who have too often been left out at City Hall.”

While threats to reproductive freedom continue to mount nationally, NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon recognizes the importance role local pro-choice champions can play in shaping innovative policies that reflect the values of Portland and Multnomah County voters.

These endorsements follow NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon PAC’s first slate of 20 candidates announced on the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade (January 22). The PAC is currently reviewing candidate questionnaires from other Portland City Council candidates. The following 25 candidates have now been endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon PAC in the 2020 Primary:
