PORTLAND, OR – Today, the 47th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon‘s Political Action Committee (PAC) proudly announced early endorsements for 20 candidates seeking office in May’s primary election. The candidates, running at the local, legislative and statewide level, have proven themselves as champions for reproductive freedom who will uphold Oregon’s proud legacy as the most pro-choice state in the nation.
This announcement comes at a critical time, with the Supreme Court of the United States readying to hear the first abortion-related case since Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation, with a conservative anti-abortion majority that now threatens to overturn Roe v. Wade. Last year, over 30 abortion bans passed across the United States. Oregon saw 12 anti-abortion bills introduced during the 2019 Legislative Session, however, pro-choice majorities ensured that no bill received a vote in committee. While threats to reproductive freedom continue to mount, more than 7-in-10 voters believe Roe v. Wade must remain the law of the land and look to NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon PAC to vet candidates they can trust to uphold their values.
Congratulating the candidates on their endorsements, Andra Stoll Carrick, Interim Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon PAC, had this to say:
“Now more than ever, we need champions who understand that reproductive freedom is a basic human right. From passing the historic Reproductive Health Equity Act to city resolutions condemning abortion bans, we need leaders at every level of office to fight back against anti-abortion extremists and promote equitable access to reproductive healthcare. We are so proud to show up and support them during this pivotal election year.”
Shauna Ballo, NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon’s PAC Chair said, “Oregon voters look to trusted organizations like ours to thoughtfully consider a candidate’s voting record and support for our policy priorities. Our board takes this responsibility seriously, and we are confident that our candidates will fight to put reproductive freedom for all first, upholding Oregon’s legacy as the most pro-choice state in the nation.”
